View from Makapuʻu Point on Oahu, Hawaii

On the far eastern end of Oahu island is an area that offers a kind of concentrated dose of Hawaii. Here the blue Pacific turns a bright turquoise before crashing on golden sands, lava rocks alternate with wide beaches, and high cliffs rise from the shoreline. Also found within the Makapu’u area is a 38-acre state park, a large aquarium, and a circa-1909 lighthouse. And see that islet just offshore? You’ll need special permission to visit. Like many uninhabited islets in Hawaii, Rabbit Island (aka Mānana Island) is a state wildlife sanctuary, and it’s home to more than 100,000 seabirds.
