Granite rocks on La Digue Island, Seychelles

Most images of Anse Source d'Argent Beach take a wide-angle view of this slice of paradise, but we’re going in for a closer look at the extraordinary rock formations. Huge granite boulders rise above sand and sea, carved by the wind, rain, and the surrounding Indian Ocean into something almost supple. Swoops, curves, hollows, and folds add a beguiling surface texture to the rocks.

After a few hours of lying on the beach, contemplating these massive formations, consider exploring everything else La Digue has to offer. Until recently cars weren’t allowed on the island, and they’re still quite rare. So, hop on your bicycle and wheel past the lanky palms, pink sand, and lush green hills of this Seychelles treasure.

Plains zebras grazing in Amboseli National Park, Kenya

Touted by many as the best place to view the towering Mt. Kilimanjaro in all its glory, Amboseli National Park rewards visitors with plenty of other beautiful sights as well. Herds of elephants are the most famous denizens of this 151-square-mile preserve in southern Kenya, but other big mammals abound, including giraffes, lions, wildebeest, buffalo, and our friends here, the plains zebra. If you’re inspired to visit on safari, all the bigger animals will be easy to spot, as Amboseli’s topography is quite flat, with dry lake beds interspersed by low-lying swampland. Don’t forget to look up: The park plays host to some 400 species of birds. Oh, and that iconic mountain is pretty nice, too.

Cenote on the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico

The word ‘cenote’ comes from the Mayan word ‘ts'onot,’ meaning ‘well.’ But unlike most wells, cenotes aren’t created by people; rather, they’re sinkholes that lead to underground caves. Ancient Mayans in the Yucatán Peninsula of present-day Mexico knew that openings to these freshwater caves dotted the landscape, sometimes hidden within the forest. Today, swimmers and scuba divers can explore some of the Yucatán’s cenotes.

The entrance pools often appear as small sinkholes or ponds but open into large limestone cave systems below the surface. Though most contain fresh water, some reach deep enough to connect with the Yucatán’s vast aquifer system, where divers might encounter salt water at lower levels. This cenote is located in Dzitnup, a small town roughly 3 miles from the city of Valladolid.

The Devil’s Cataract section of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe

It’s best known by the name given it by British colonialists in honor of their queen—Victoria Falls. But the indigenous Tonga name has a descriptive zing that’s hard to beat. Mosi-oa-Tunya translates to ‘The Smoke That Thunders,’ and that pretty much sums up the astonishing sight and sound of the world’s largest waterfall here on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. At more than a mile wide and 355 feet high, it’s a wonder to behold in any language. The main part of the falls is a massive sheet of the Zambezi River that tumbles into a deep chasm.

We’re looking here at a relatively small section of the waterfall, a roiling chute that’s been diverted by an islet at the crest of the falls: ‘The Devil’s Cataract.’ It seems to us that’s another perfectly fitting name.

Hanalei Valley in Kauai, Hawaii

Access to Havasu Canyon in Arizona isn’t always easy. Weather conditions can force the closure of this portion of the Grand Canyon. These falls and the nearby village are only accessible by foot, pack animal, or helicopter. But those who manage to make the trek safely are rewarded with views of the vibrant waters of Havasu Creek (Havasu means ‘blue-green water’). The torrent of Havasu Falls is one of several waterfalls along the creek’s course. It winds through the Havasupai Reservation and many tribal members work as educators and guides to visitors to the area.

The coastline at Baler in the Philippines

Here on a wide bay of the Philippine Sea, the sunsets are as spectacular as the surf. Baler, in the northern province of Aurora, is renowned for some of the best surfing beaches in Southeast Asia. Pro and amateur alike are drawn to long stretches of slate-gray sand and breakers that can crest at nine feet tall. For visitors not interested in hanging ten, Baler offers snug coves, dramatic waterfalls, scatterings of primeval rock formations, and a colonial history stretching back to 1609. Somewhat more recent history was made when Francis Ford Coppola filmed a famous surfing scene at a Baler beach for ‘Apocalypse Now.’

Nienhagen Wood in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany

Nienhagen Wood sits on the western edge of its namesake village. Situated on the Baltic Sea coast of the Rostock district in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, the forest is primarily beech trees. At the edge of the forest, a cliff drops to the beach, and it’s the trees’ exposure to the sea air that may have contributed to the forest’s nickname: Ghost Wood. The trees tend to twist inland, with more branches growing away from the sea. On a cloudy day or a foggy evening, Nienhagen Wood can indeed look a little ghostly.

In the waters off Boracay Island in the Philippines

After it was extoled by several renowned travel publications, Boracay Island has morphed from a kind of bohemian backpacker’s beach secret into one of the most popular resort spots in the Philippines. Nestled among the Western Visayas island group, Boracay draws visitors to its star attraction, the White Beach. You can guess what’s there: ravishing, powdery, white sands meeting the warm blue sea. Hop aboard one of the many paraws (outrigger boats), pilot a parasail, or do like our shutterbug here and just swim into the Sibuyan Sea to truly immerse yourself in this Southeast Asian paradise.
