Pools of water in The Subway, a tunnel in Zion National Park, Utah

Hikers, get those permits ready and your wetsuits on: Whichever direction you choose to enter The Subway (from the ‘top down’ or ‘bottom up’), you’re in a for a challenging trek. Prepare for some creek wading, or even full-on swims across pools of chilly water. In some of the trickier sections, a bit of rappelling over rocks is required. What do you get for all this strenuous canyoneering? A big helping of the rough-hewn beauty that southwest Utah’s Zion National Park is justly renowned for. We’re guessing you’ll also feel a fine sense of accomplishment after clambering into and out of this magnificent and challenging tube-shaped slot canyon.
