The Devil’s Cataract section of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe

It’s best known by the name given it by British colonialists in honor of their queen—Victoria Falls. But the indigenous Tonga name has a descriptive zing that’s hard to beat. Mosi-oa-Tunya translates to ‘The Smoke That Thunders,’ and that pretty much sums up the astonishing sight and sound of the world’s largest waterfall here on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. At more than a mile wide and 355 feet high, it’s a wonder to behold in any language. The main part of the falls is a massive sheet of the Zambezi River that tumbles into a deep chasm.

We’re looking here at a relatively small section of the waterfall, a roiling chute that’s been diverted by an islet at the crest of the falls: ‘The Devil’s Cataract.’ It seems to us that’s another perfectly fitting name.
